Chapter 22

Danios and I were the last two girls to walk into the dining room. Enjoying our ‘girl time’ a little too long. They had to send one of the men in tights to get us. They didn’t waste any time once we walk through the doors.

“Ladies, now that we are all here, we can begin. Team one is up against team four in the winter arena. Team two is against team three in the rainforest arena. Will the two teams in the winter arena please follow me? I will be back for the other teams once I get these girls situated.”

Thirty girls follow behind him. Danios and I bring up the rear. Some of us are giggling and laughing, while others are more serious and quiet.

Thirty of us will go home tonight. That makes me nervous. I wouldn’t normally be, but this team thing means it’s not all on me, I have to depend on others. And I don’t have a high opinion of most of these girls. How can I trust them to do well enough to win?

Why have team trials anyway? That doesn’t show what a luna is capable of at all.

We stop at an enormous door, made of some type of heavy metal, surrounded by symbols. A large etching of a Lycan standing proudly covers the front. Finnick pushes the door open, and it splits the Lycan in half as the scene behind the doorway appears.

Snow covers the ground as far as the eye can see. It’s still snowing, but I can’t tell where it’s coming from since the room is inside the building. The ceiling high above us almost looks like clouds.

We all shuffle into the vast space. It has to be below freezing here. My teeth are already chattering. All the girls are shaking in our tiny white dresses. This has to be magical, but it feels and looks so real.

“Team one, you will stay here. The hill over there,” Finnick points to the field with a small hill, “is your base. There is a replica of that hill on the other end of this arena. That is team four’s base. To win, you must have both the team’s flag. The black flag, as well as the white flag, inside your base. The magic will shut off as soon as one team has both flags on their home base. It will continue until this has occurred. Make no mistake, this may be made of magic, but the game is very real. The environment is dangerous. So the sooner you finish this trial, the safer you all will be. The trial starts when you hear the alarm.”

“White? You guys picked white? What a bunch of pathetic wolves. You know white represents weak, surrender, and help?”

Team four laughs while some girls on our team look down and fidget. They may be embarrassed, but that’s when I perk up. I no longer have any fear that we will lose. These girls aren’t very smart. My smug smile makes a few of them huff as they follow Finnick to their base.
